Tennessee Insurance Dept. Makes Multiple Leadership Changes

The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) has announced multiple additions to senior leadership roles and staff updates from Commissioner Carter Lawrence.

Jennifer Peck

Jennifer Peck has assumed the role of Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer while continuing her role as Deputy Commissioner – overseeing the Fire Prevention / State Fire Marshal & # 39; s Office, the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA) / Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Commission and the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board (TECB).

Previously, Peck was an executive director in the Regulatory Boards department. Prior to joining the division, she owned Peck Legal Group, PLLC, which specializes in litigation and mediation in domestic relations.

Toby Compton

Toby Compton has been promoted to Deputy Commissioner – overseeing insurance, regulatory boards, securities and TennCare Oversight. Previously, Compton was Assistant Commissioner for the Division of Regulatory Boards for the Division.

Prior to joining TDCI, Compton was the President and CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors for Greater Tennessee, held leadership positions at the Metro Sports Authority in Nashville, and worked at the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

Bill Huddleston

Bill Huddleston has been promoted to assistant insurance commissioner. Huddleston, a member of the TDCI team since 2014, was formerly Director of Insurance, overseeing the division's administration, including agent licensing, corporate investigations, company financial analysis and other duties. Huddleston was a chartered accountant and also served as a trustee in the insurance division.

In 2017, he received a Governor's Excellence in Service Award for leadership in the Division of Regulatory Boards. Prior to joining TDCI, Huddleston served as a legislative auditor with the Office of the Comptroller.

Alex Martin

Alex Martin has joined the division as Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Regulatory Boards. Previously, Martin served as assistant director of external affairs and director of appointments for Governor Bill Lee. In his previous position, Martin worked with the Lee Administration to appoint many of the members of the division councils and committees within the Division of Regulatory Boards.

Jim Tracy

Jim Tracy joined TDCI as a senior advisor to the department. Tracy was most recently the state director for USDA Rural Development in Tennessee, working with rural communities to address local issues including facilities, broadband, water, and sewerage. In this role, he facilitated federal grants and lower-interest loans for businesses and citizens.

Tracy & # 39; s list of public services spans decades – he previously served as Senator, Member of the Bedford County Board of Education, President of the Shelbyville-Bedford County Chamber of Commerce, Founding Member of the Bedford County Economic Development and Tourism Committee, and Chairman of the Tennessee Leadership Council of the National Federation of Independent Business.

Tracy owned and operated his own insurance company for over 20 years, where he sold all insurance lines.

Patrick Merkel

Patrick Merkel was promoted to Director of Insurance after serving as Chief Counsel for Insurance, Securities and TennCare Oversight since July 2019. Merkel is on his second term in the department. He first joined TDCI in 2007 and served in the Division of Regulatory Boards and as chief counsel for Fire Prevention and Law Enforcement. Merkel previously worked in private practice, representing clients before the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission, the Tennessee Office of the Attorney General and Reporter, state courts and the Tennessee Court of Appeals.
